Solutions and how they work

Science
Grade 6

A clear liquid with something dissolved in it is called a solution. Some, like salt water, have a solid dissolved in them, and others, like carbonated water, have a gas: carbonated water has carbon dioxide in it. With litmus paper, solutions can be sorted into three groups: acid, neutral, and alkaline. Some solutions, such as hydrochloric acid, even dissolve metal and change it into something else, and the aluminum that dissolves in it becomes a material with different properties. Two clear liquids may look the same, but their smell, what is left when they evaporate, and whether they are acid or alkaline show that every solution has properties of its own.
