How levers work

Science
Grade 6

A lever is a bar held up at one point that lets you lift something heavy. The point that holds the bar is the fulcrum, the point where you push is the effort, and the point that acts on the object is the load. The farther the effort is from the fulcrum, and the closer the load is to it, the less force you need. On an experimental lever with weights on both arms, the two sides balance when the weight times the distance from the fulcrum is the same on each side. With this rule you can work out where the other weight has to hang. Scissors, bottle openers, and nail pullers are everyday tools that use levers to do work with less force.
