Using electricity

Science
Grade 6

Electricity does not only come out of a wall socket; you can also make it yourself. Turning the handle of a hand generator, or shining light on a solar cell, makes electricity, and you can store it in a capacitor. Stored electricity turns into light, sound, heat, or movement when you connect a bulb, a motor, or a buzzer, and many tools work by changing electricity in this way. Comparing a small bulb with an LED on the same electricity shows that the LED uses less and shines for much longer. Programming a sensor so that a light comes on only when someone is near is one way to use electricity without wasting it.
