How human and animal bodies work

Science
Grade 6

Food goes in through the mouth and, as it passes through the stomach and the intestines, it is changed into nutrients the body can take in. Saliva changes starch into sugar, and what is not taken in leaves the body as waste. In breathing, the lungs take oxygen into the body and send carbon dioxide out. Nutrients and oxygen are carried all over the body by blood, which the heart pushes around, and the blood carries the carbon dioxide back again. Counting your pulse shows that the heart beats steadily. The body has many organs that do these jobs and work together to keep us alive.
