Our life and food production

Social studies
Grade 5

The food we eat every day is produced all over the country, in places whose climate and land suit it, and it keeps the nation fed. Rice, vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy, and fish each come from the areas that match them. People who grow rice or work at sea plan every step and work together, improve their skills with better varieties and machines, and take up newer methods such as fish farming. They also work on how food is moved, priced, and delivered, so that safe, good food reaches the places where we live. At the same time, food production has problems: less of our food is grown at home, we depend on imports, there are fewer workers, and fish stocks have to be looked after. Keeping food safe, and finding ways of producing it that can go on, both matter.
