Our life and industry

Social studies
Grade 5

Japan produces many kinds of goods: machinery, metals, chemicals, and more. Factory areas run in a belt along the Pacific coast and also spread inland. Most factories are small or medium sized, though large factories produce the greater share by value; large and small support each other, and small factories with high skills keep industry going. People who make cars plan each step, work with other factories, and use fine skills to make good products that match what buyers and society want. Japan has few natural resources, so it brings in materials and fuel and sends products out, and transport and trade play a large part in keeping industry going. In recent years more goods are made overseas, and traditional crafts, skilled small factories, and new technology are all part of the future of Japanese industry.
