Information and industry

Social studies
Grade 5

People who work in news, at television and radio stations and at newspapers, gather information and check it for accuracy, fairness, and respect for people before they report it, and they edit it so that it is easy to understand. What these media say has a great effect on daily life. Businesses use information too: shops and delivery companies handle huge amounts of data with computer networks, using checkout systems, GPS, and IC cards for cashless payment and for knowing where things are, and this makes selling, delivering, and other services better. But as more of life depends on information, problems appear as well: reports that hurt people, leaks of private data, confusion, gaps between those who can use information and those who cannot, and bullying. It matters that we judge what we read carefully and take responsibility for what we send.
