How running water changes the land

Science
Grade 5

Running water does three things to the land: it wears the land away, it carries the stones and soil it has worn away, and it drops them again somewhere else. You can see all three by pouring water down a slope of soil. Comparing the upper and lower parts of a river shows the difference: upstream the river is narrow and the stones are large and sharp, while downstream it is wide and the stones are small and round. How much it rains changes the speed and the amount of the water, and heavy rain can change the land greatly and cause floods.
