Living things through the seasons

Science
Grade 4

Plants and animals look very different in warm seasons and cold seasons. Measuring the air temperature with a thermometer, you record cherry trees, sponge gourds, insects, and birds such as swallows and ducks through the seasons for a whole year. Animals are busy in warm seasons and quiet in cold ones, and many spend the winter under fallen leaves or in the soil. Migrating birds like swallows travel to faraway countries as the seasons change. Plants grow longer stems and more leaves when it is warm, and die back and leave seeds when it is cold. Watching all this shows how closely temperature and growth are tied together.
