Our life and government

Politics in Japan follows the Constitution of Japan. It has three principles: that the people decide how the country is governed, that the rights everyone is born with are respected, and that the country does not make war. The Emperor, whom the Constitution calls the symbol of Japan, carries out formal duties with the advice and approval of the Cabinet. The work of government is shared out: the Diet makes the laws and the budget, the Cabinet does the actual work under those laws, and the courts settle disputes by the Constitution and the laws. Citizens take part in trials as lay judges. Members of the Diet and other representatives are chosen in elections, and the taxes that are collected pay for schools, roads, and other public services. Cities and other local governments make their own rules and carry out what people wish for, such as support for raising children, care for older people, recovery after earthquakes and floods, and clearing snow. Government is needed to solve the problems of society, and it matters that each of us takes part in it.
